OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Sol, near Astra at a fifth of the price
OpenAI announced GPT-6.1 Sol at DevDay on September 29, 2026, a week after GPT-6 Sol. OpenAI says it delivers nearly the same results as GPT-6 Astra on agentic coding, computer use and professional work at one fifth of Astra's token prices: $2 per million input tokens, $0.10 cached and $10 output. The share of responses with a factual error at low reasoning effort fell from 11.4% to 7.7%. It is available in the API, ChatGPT, Codex and GitHub Copilot.
Why it matters
It scores 52 on the Intelligence Index against Astra's 53, so for most work Astra's price is now hard to justify. It also halves the cached input price of GPT-6 Sol, which matters most for long agent loops.
Who should care
Anyone on GPT-6 Astra or GPT-6 Sol
What you can do
Move GPT-6 Sol traffic to gpt-6.1-sol at no extra cost, and test it on the tasks you currently send to Astra.
